Bandha means to close something, to block. When performing a bandha, the flow of energy is consciously held in certain parts of the body. Therefore, when it is released, energy flows through the whole body much more and stronger.

There are four types of bandhas:

Mula bandha – withdrawal of the anus;

Uddiyana bandha – raising the diaphragm;

Jalandhara bandha – chin lock;

Maha bandha – performance of all three bandhas at once.

As a rule, the breath is held while performing bandhas. Mula bandha and jalandhara bandha can be performed after both inhalation and exhalation, while uddiyana bandha and maha bandha are practiced only with breath retention after exhalation.

Effects:

Bandhas close and stop the flow of blood. After they are released, much more fresh blood flows into the body part, while old and worn-out cells are washed away. In this way, all organs are strengthened, renewed and rejuvenated, and blood circulation improves. In addition, bandhas also affect brain centers, nadis and chakras. Energy pathways are purified, blocks are released and energy is exchanged better. Bandhas dissolve stress and mental turmoil and induce inner harmony and balance.
